Men's Ties - How To Choose The Perfect Tie

by Sue Mitchell

If you are considering purchasing a men's tie as a gift for someone you know but are not sure which tie to choose, there are some tips that can help you decide. Men's ties come in all sorts of design options including colors, shapes, sizes and materials. The tie you choose will likely depend on the preference of the man you are shopping for but there are some general tie shopping guidelines.

The color of men ties is very important. The color of the tie that is worn will represent the man who is wearing it. With several thousand-color combination to choose from, it is a good idea to choose a color that can be worn for any occasion. Solid colors can pretty much be worn anywhere and still look fabulous. Many times, a man who is going to work in an office will wear solid colors like White, Blue or Black. On the other hand, for a formal occasion, the tie would be Black, Gold or Silver. For those who work in the entertainment industry or similar, they may want to wear a bit of a "louder" tie.

Men ties also come with designs and patterns. The tie can be striped, dotted or crossed. It can also contain images or letters. Most of these ties would not be suited for a very formal or business like event but, it really just depends on the man's preference and personality. For the man who is a little more serious, the "funny" or "wild" ties would likely not be a good choice. If the man is more outgoing and likes to stand out or make people laugh then, undoubtedly a tie with different colored spots or cartoon animals would be a wise choice for him.

Another factor to consider when choosing is the material, which it is made from. Ties can come in any material imaginable from Silk to Cotton, Jean to Polyester and even Nylon. Silk ties are easy to maintain because they do not require ironing but have to be taken to the dry cleaners for cleaning. Although Silk ties cost a bit more, they are very elegant looking. Cotton ties are more common but will require a good ironing before wearing. Jean ties are not those common but for the very unique and old fashioned guy they are perfect.

The last thing you should consider when purchasing a man's tie is what type of tie you will purchase. There are short and long tie s, wide and skinny ties and even bow tie s. Short ties would be more suited for a shorter man while longer ties would work better for a taller man. Wide and skinny ties would also work in a similar way. Although, some men have stopped wearing the wide ties all together, bow ties are suit able only for special or very formal occasions.

Once you have chosen which tie is just right for your special man, be sure to get a gift receipt just in case. This way, if they are too embarrassed to say that it does not suit them, they can exchange it for one they like instead of letting it sit in their closet unworn.
