New Style Statements for Fall
by Hendrik Pohl
There's nothing like the entry of a new season when setting the stage to make a fashion statement or two. While all the other men in the vicinity are still scrambling to get their fall and winter coats out of the mothballs, even your smallest style statements can have a huge impact. Here are a few that you may want to try for fall this year.
Green and Red No, it's not the Christmas theme come early. In fact, the appropriate greens and reds for this season's fashion statements aren't even the ones Macy's uses come December. Who knew that the more sombre shades of these cheery colors could be so stylish on men?
Bottle green (read: dark, dark green or moss green) and burgundy are some of the hottest colors for the season, as evidenced by their prevalence on designers' newest collections. Seen on everything from shirts to coats to shoes, it's too big of a trend for you to pass up.
Veronique Nichanian may have been on another level with her dark army green peacoat at Hermes, but you can pick up her example from there. A deep enough shade of green can look good on just about anything from coat to trousers, so it's something you may like to try for the season.
Crimson was the other star color of the season, and you may want to attempt it the same way it was used in the Giorgio Armani collection. Black and gray outfits are pretty de rigeur for the colder seasons, but a little peek of burgundy or some other deep red can give any outfit an instant style boost. Scarves and sweaters were also there to help.
Bright Colors Even in these fashion-conscious times where the metrosexual thrives, many men are still stuck dressing entirely in monochromatic hues. All that is bound to change, beginning with the trend of bright, eye-popping colors that's sprouting all over this season.
Take Dolce & Gabbana, for example, which rolled out a classic black and white tux ensemble, save for the sheening checkered red tux jacket with black lapels. Hermes took a similar track, finishing a classic shirt and slacks ensemble with an edgy skinny necktie and a fire engine red parka. And who could ignore those cherry red kicks designed by Kanye West himself, recently released by Louis Vuitton?
If you're not that comfortable with bright colors yet, you could start small. Neck ties can be had in all sorts of colors, including ones in louder and more eye-catching shades. Your watch can also become your statement, now that numerous brands have been releasing brightly colored plastic collections. If you've ever had an itch for loud, screaming colors before, this season is the best time to do some scratching.
Monochromatic Men Black and white is a standard color combination in men's fashion; who hasn't worn it at least once? This season, though, you'll want to try a whole new twist on this classic combo: black on black.
It's popping up in more than a few places, especially now that the world of men's fashion is reflecting the more morose and serious mood all over the globe. Costume National and Dior Homme are just a few in a major movement to pair black with, well, black.
The secret to pulling off the black on black combination successfully is to pair different shades of the color together. That way, each piece you wear remains distinct even when they're all of the same general color. A little bit of texture also works great because they help create extra visual distinctions between each piece.
Fall this season is bringing lots of surprises, not least in the world of men's fashion. There's quite a number of new things out there for you to try out, and you'd best do all your trying out before the rest of the fashionable men of the globe do too.

Of the Top 5 Fall/Winter 2009/10 trends, the #4 trend for your wardrobe is bright color (#1 is the suit; #2 is the white statement blouse; #3 is prints/florals). Every bright color you can think of walked down an A-list runway, including taxicab yellow, shocking Schiaparelli pink, royal purple, and tomato red. And one of the easiest ways to brighten up a non-cheery winter's day is in a statement coat in a bold hue, with commensurately bright polish on your nails as well.
