5 Style Sins Men Commit with Neckties

by Hendrik Pohl

Neck ties are a simple matter for a lot of men out there. After all, you just pick out any tie in your closet and then do it up over a white shirt, right? Wrong. Not all ties are made equal, and the fashionable man knows that true style comes from going beyond the basic combination. Here are some of the more common faux pas that you're likely to see at the office, outside or, heaven forbid, on you.

Too Thin ties Like most other things in the world of men's fashion, neckties are all about balance. If you disrupt that balance, chances are good that you'll end up with an atrocious outfit. And when it comes to disrupting that balance, width is where a lot of men commit the crime.

Take the skinny tie, for example. Around 2007, it became a major style trend, especially in the art and entertainment industry. Rockers and celebrities everywhere began sporting the ultra-slim tie. The trend, however, was easily taken to the extreme. Celebs began to wear ties that bordered on bolos, almost shoelaces even. Needless to say, the final result was far from fashionable.

Getting on a trend is one thing, but taking it to the extreme is another. Unless you're sure that the newest style fad will actually look good on you, it may be best to stay away.

Too Wide ties On the other side of the coin is the tie that's simply too wide, as if you'd tie d a bib around your neck. While the previous crime was often committed by younger men trying to look hip and cool, this one is usually done by the older folks who're trying to make a bigger statement by wearing a bigger tie.

Here's one rule of thumb that you can apply almost everywhere in men's fashion: if you're not sure about how far to take something, the safest option is a happy medium. With ties, for example, your safest choice is to stick to the medium lengths that you see at boutiques most often. Yes, making a statement by going in either direction of the scale sometimes looks good on the red carpet. However, you also have to be ready for the risk it entails.

Novelty ties This is one faux pas that will always be faux pas unless you have an extenuating reason to commit it, like Halloween or Fourth of July. Few acts in men's fashion are as egregious as doing up a novelty tie, simply because it's not something a sensibly stylish man does.

If you feel that a novelty tie is indeed justified, make sure to pair it with an outfit that's as plain and solid as possible. You've already got a visually busy neck tie ; there's no sense in having the rest of your ensemble compete with it and make you look like wallpaper.

Neglected ties Your neckties are probably among the lowest maintenance of the clothes in your closet. Low-maintenance, however, is very different from no-maintenance. ties still require a little upkeep, and you shouldn't dare leave the house with a sloppy neck tie.

As soon as you notice that your tie is wrinkling, crinkling or creasing, it's time to smooth things out by steaming the whole length of it. Get rid of stains as soon as you find them, and hang your ties up as soon as possible after you undo them. You spent money on those things, so you may as well make them last.

Mismatched ties If there's anything that the sartorial man simply has to have, it's that skill of matching the neck tie to the shirt in terms of color and pattern. It doesn't have to be perfect, as long as it can take you beyond the realm of any-neck tie -on-white. That's something a color wheel and a little time in front of the mirror can always help sort out.

There's more to neckties than just the striped ones you knot up over your white shirt everyday. It's a small detail, but it can make a major style statement once you learn to use it to its fullest potential.
