Office Dress Codes - Men's Fashion for the Workplace
by Hendrik Pohl
Fashion in the workplace: it almost sounds like an oxymoron. But the truly stylish guy knows that style need never be out of place in the office; the right designer pieces can be as wearable as anything, while a thoughtfully assembled office ensemble can look off-the-runway too. You just need to know what to pick and how to wear them.
Know the RulesChances are good that you'll want to wear these styles to the office, which means you'll have to brush up on The Rules. Each office or company has limits on what employees can wear. Whether that means jeans or coat and tie, one thing's for sure, you have to comply.
Most employers satisfy themselves with just setting a minimum, such as 'shirt and tie' or 'pants and tie.' This means that you're free to experiment a bit, as long as you more or less fall within the guidelines of the office dress code. Shirts can come in patterns, neckties can have different shapes and there are countless cuts and fabrics to pants. If the rules in your office aren't clear, be sure to ask a supervisor before playing around with outfits.
Wearing to WorkPay close attention to the things you do while you're at work, as they're also a big factor in how you should dress. Do you spend most of the day just sitting down in front of your desk? You'll want to invest in softer fabrics that don't crease as much when you're on your butt all day. On the other hand, more physical jobs (Manhattan bike messengers come to mind) will require more durable fabrics that can withstand the elements on a daily basis.
Your work environment should be reflected not just in the fabrics that you choose but also the pieces you wear to work. Light linen pants, while appropriate for going to and from offices all day, will be impractical if you sit in an air-conditioned cubicle from 9 to 5. Similarly, a three-piece suit can work for the manager who's just in the boardroom, but is impractical for the road warrior who's always on the go.
Bring a BagToo many men think that bags are a purely feminine accessory, and that toting a tote to work detracts from their macho factor. Bags, in fact, are a practical way to get around the problem of having too many things to bring. If you've got a laptop, mobile phone, PDA and a portfolio of documents to bring, do yourself a favor and stow them all in a bag.
Not only are bulky pockets (and, consequently, deformed pants and jacket pockets) ugly, but they also make it difficult to move around. Compare that to a bagged situation where you can arrive at your meetings looking un-harassed and put-together, with all your stuff in place. Besides, the right bag can make a quick and discreet style statement.
One thing you have to remember about bringing bags to work is to steer away from the designs you would've picked in high school. Big print designs are a no-no and all but a few backpacks are faux pas. Explore more mature options like a portfolio or medium-size tote in leather or canvas, respectively. Instead of paying for the design, invest in a piece from a brand that's well-known for workmanship and quality.
The key to doing functional fashion is giving consideration to various factors of your work environment, your office, the tasks you do everyday, your commute. Adjust your wardrobe to these, and then just make sure to follow the basic tenets of style when you're putting outfits together. Dress for function, and the fashion element will simply follow.
